Meetings

We have begun a campaign to inform the non-horse people in Wyoming about the horse industry. We had a booth at State Fair and we also had a booth at the Natural Resource Conference in Casper recently where there was a short presentation on the economic impact of the horse industry. We were very surprised and pleased at the very positive response we received there.

We are working closely with the Wyoming Livestock Board on horse brand inspection, premise registration and equine health requirements and we think we will see some very positive changes in the next year. The Livestock Board is working to incorporate electronic identification into the brand program and there is no doubt that the new electronic chips will revolutionize horse identification in the next few years.

Bill Gentle and Judy Horton will be representing the Horse Council at the Wyoming Legislature and while this is a budget session, we do anticipate a few bills which could affect the horse industry. We are sure an animal welfare bill will be introduced, and while we hope to be able to support it, our concern is that if normal animal husbandry practices are not defined carefully, it could affect us detrimentally.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 7th, 2008 in Douglas on the State Fairgrounds.

Call Bill Gentle at 307 634-1743 for more details.
